Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws
The Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 aims to enhance community safety by extending juvenile curfew hours and empowering police with additional enforcement capabilities. The legislation, introduced by Mayor Muriel Bowser and Councilmember Brooke Pinto, sets a curfew of 11 p. m. for July and August 2025 and extends the curfew to include 17-year-olds. The Chief of Police will be authorized to create extended curfew zones, starting at 7 p.
m. for 15 consecutive days, which could be extended based on safety concerns. This legislative initiative responds to recent incidents of youth violence in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle. Mayor Bowser highlighted the importance of taking action to prevent violence before it occurs. The District also plans to continue supporting youth through various summer programs, including the Mayor Marion S.
Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. The legislation will be presented to the Council at its July 1 meeting. Enhanced police presence has already been implemented across the city to deter negative behavior.
