Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to enhance public safety by extending juvenile curfew hours. The legislation aims to empower the Metropolitan Police Department with tools to curb violence among youth, particularly in commercial areas. Under the new rules, curfew hours will change to 11 PM every day during July and August 2025, including for 17-year-olds. Additionally, the Chief of Police can establish extended curfew zones starting at 7 PM for 15 days, extendable to 30 days based on safety concerns. Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the need for safe recreational spaces for youth while balancing public safety.

Recent disturbances involving juveniles in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle prompted this emergency legislation. The Council will evaluate the proposal at its July 1 Legislative Meeting. The District also continues to support positive youth engagement through various summer programs.
