Mayor Muriel Bowser introduced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to address public safety concerns related to juvenile behavior. The act changes juvenile curfew hours to 11 PM in July and August, extending its applicability to 17-year-olds. The Chief of Police can create extended curfew zones starting at 7 PM for up to 30 days, based on safety assessments. This legislation emerged in response to disturbances involving juveniles in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle. Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the importance of providing safe spaces for youth while empowering law enforcement to prevent violence.

The Metropolitan Police Department has previously increased its presence to deter negative behavior. The act will be considered during the District of Columbia’s Legislative Meeting on July 1. This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to ensure community safety while supporting youth engagement.
