Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, which modifies curfew hours for juveniles, extending them to 11 PM for July and August. The legislation also permits the Chief of Police to create curfew zones that start at 7 PM, lasting for 15 days with possible extensions. Mayor Bowser stated the need for immediate action to tackle rising violence associated with youth gatherings in public areas. Councilmember Brooke Pinto reinforced the importance of providing safe recreational spaces while empowering police to act when necessary. Recent disturbances have prompted MPD to enhance their presence in neighborhoods to mitigate negative behaviors.

The legislation aims to improve safety for both juveniles and the community at large. The Council will review this emergency measure during their July 1 meeting. The new curfew provisions are expected to provide law enforcement with more effective tools to address public safety concerns.
