Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, extending juvenile curfew hours to 11 PM during July and August. The legislation empowers the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to establish specific curfew zones and implement earlier curfews in response to community safety concerns. This move follows recent incidents where large groups of juveniles engaged in violent and unlawful behavior in various neighborhoods, including the Wharf and Navy Yard. Bowser highlighted the necessity of proactive measures to safeguard both youth and the broader community. Councilmember Brooke Pinto emphasized the dual approach of providing safe recreational spaces and enhancing police authority.

The MPD has previously attempted to address juvenile conduct but faced limitations in enforcement tools. The legislation is set for consideration by the Council of the District of Columbia during the July 1 Legislative Meeting. Increased police presence will accompany these measures to deter negative behaviors while supporting positive youth engagement through summer programming.
