Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to extend curfew hours and enhance public safety for juveniles. Under the new law, curfew will begin at 11 PM in July and August 2025 and will apply to 17-year-olds. The Chief of Police will gain authority to establish extended curfew zones, where curfews can start as early as 7 PM for 15 consecutive days, extendable based on public safety needs. This legislative response addresses recent disturbances involving youth gatherings leading to violence in areas like the Wharf and Navy Yard. Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the importance of safe recreational spaces for young people while ensuring effective law enforcement measures.

The legislation aims to prevent violence and disorder before it starts, reflecting the city’s commitment to public safety. MPD has already increased police presence in neighborhoods to tackle negative behavior. The proposal will be considered at the Council's July 1 legislative meeting.
