Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to enhance public safety by extending curfew hours for juveniles. The new law will establish a curfew of 11 PM for all juveniles in July and August, while allowing earlier curfews starting at 7 PM in designated zones. This initiative addresses rising concerns about youth gatherings linked to violence in popular areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle. Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the dual need for safe recreational spaces and effective policing to prevent violence. The legislation, which will be reviewed at the Council’s July 1 meeting, empowers the Chief of Police to implement these changes based on public safety needs.

Increased police presence has already been seen this spring in response to troubling juvenile conduct. The District continues to support positive youth engagement through summer programs like the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. This approach aims to balance safety measures with opportunities for youth activities.
