Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, designed to extend curfew hours and improve public safety measures. The new curfew will be set at 11 PM for juveniles in July and August 2025, and the legislation will now include 17-year-olds. The Chief of Police will have the authority to implement extended curfew zones, which can begin as early as 7 PM for up to 30 days to address safety concerns. Bowser highlighted the need for stronger tools to combat patterns of violence involving groups of youth in various neighborhoods. This legislation follows increased police presence in response to recent disturbances in commercial areas.

The proposal will be reviewed by the Council of the District of Columbia at their July 1 meeting. By enhancing enforcement and accountability, the city aims to create safer environments for its youth and community. The District also continues to promote positive youth engagement through summer programs.
