Mayor Bowser Unveils Newly Transformed Mamie Peanut Johnson Plaza, Highlights State of Good Repair Investments in FY26 Budget
Mayor Muriel Bowser unveiled the newly transformed Mamie “Peanut” Johnson Plaza in Washington, DC, marking the completion of a $41 million infrastructure project aimed at improving safety and accessibility at a busy intersection. This project connects the Eckington, NoMa, Union Market, and Shaw communities, introducing two-way traffic and simplified traffic patterns while enhancing pedestrian and bicycle access. The Florida Avenue Multimodal Streetscape Project complements these efforts by linking important residential and commercial areas and adding new sidewalks, bike lanes, and bus platforms. “Thanks to Mayor Bowser’s leadership, these projects transform a once-chaotic intersection into a corridor that supports all modes of travel,” said DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum. The plaza honors Mamie “Peanut” Johnson, the first woman to pitch in the Negro Leagues, whose legacy inspires future generations.
More than 1,200 residents participated in naming the new public spaces, highlighting the community's involvement in the project. Last week, Mayor Bowser also presented her FY26 Budget, which includes significant investments in transportation and infrastructure across the city. These developments signify a commitment to modernizing the District's infrastructure in response to rapid growth.
