Mayor Bowser Announces 500,000 to Support Local Businesses at The Parks at Walter Reed

Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced a significant $500,000 grant program to support local businesses activating retail areas at The Parks at Walter Reed, awarding funds to five businesses, including DC Pop-Up and Tropical Smoothie Café. The grants will aid in covering essential design and construction costs, as well as equipment purchases necessary for these businesses to thrive. Bowser highlighted the importance of nurturing local entrepreneurs, particularly women and entrepreneurs of color, stating that such support is vital to building an equitable economy. The Parks at Walter Reed is envisioned as a vibrant mixed-use community, featuring over 3 million square feet of development and more than 2,200 residential units. Alongside this grant program, DMPED is accepting applications for additional initiatives, including the Great Streets Retail Grant, which aims to enhance retail opportunities across DC.

Applications for these programs are open until April 14, 2025. The redevelopment of The Parks at Walter Reed is a collaborative effort that has been in the making for over 15 years, showcasing the community's commitment to revitalization. This initiative not only aims to boost the local economy but also to create a thriving environment for future businesses and residents.
