Mayor Bowser Announces Strategic Investments in Districts Public Schools, Including 2.7 Increase to the UPSFF Foundation Level

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced a 2. 74% increase to the uniform per student funding formula (UPSFF) foundation level for DC’s public schools, elevating it to $15,070 despite a recent $325 million downward revision in the Fiscal Year 2026 revenue estimate. This funding will support over 101,000 students expected to enroll next school year and follows a historic 12. 4% UPSFF increase in FY 2025, which was crucial for raising teacher salaries. Mayor Bowser highlighted that these investments are essential for maintaining academic achievements and providing students with valuable opportunities.

Over the past decade, local school funding has doubled, resulting in improved teacher retention rates and increased student enrollment in DC Public Schools (DCPS) and charter schools. The announcement coincides with the release of DCPS’s FY 2026 initial school budgets, which focus on enrollment, targeted support, and sustainability. A School Sustainability Fund will ensure schools maintain appropriate teacher-to-student ratios. Chancellor Dr. Lewis D.

Ferebee emphasized that excellent classroom teachers are vital to student success, reflecting the administration's commitment to prioritizing quality education. This strategic investment underscores the District's dedication to navigating budget constraints while enhancing public education.
