Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrated the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the U. S. Since its launch in 2010, the program has grown significantly, expanding from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across the District and surrounding areas. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum noted that CaBi has become essential for local transportation, connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites. In 2024, riders took over 6 million trips, marking a 36.
9% increase from the previous year and continuing a streak of 43 months of monthly ridership growth. The DDOT has prioritized the replacement of aging stations and introduced a solar canopy pilot to improve e-bike service. Additionally, the program now offers free adaptive cycling sessions for individuals with disabilities, enhancing access to cycling. The Bowser Administration has invested in multimodal transportation, building extensive bike lanes and expanding the trail network. The FY26 Budget further supports these initiatives with substantial funding for transportation improvements across the District.
