Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, a trailblazing bikeshare system launched on September 20, 2010. Since its inception, the program has expanded from 49 stations and 400 bikes to more than 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, facilitating over 50 million rides. In 2024, the program saw a record-breaking 6 million trips, a 36. 9% increase from the previous year. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted the system's critical role in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites.
Recent upgrades include a solar canopy pilot that allows e-bikes to recharge while docked and free adaptive cycling sessions for individuals with disabilities. The Bowser Administration has invested significantly in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network. The FY26 Budget continues this trend with substantial funding for bike and pedestrian infrastructure. As the program evolves, it aims to enhance accessibility and sustainability for all users.
