Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration celebrates 15 years of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), which launched on September 20, 2010, and is now the largest municipality-owned bikeshare in the U. S. Initially starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi has expanded to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across the District and surrounding areas. In 2024, the system recorded more than 6 million trips, breaking its own annual ridership record for the second year in a row. E-bikes, introduced in 2018, account for more than 60% of rides, highlighting a shift toward sustainable transport.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has replaced over 140 of the oldest stations since 2021 and launched a solar canopy pilot to enhance e-bike service. CaBi also promotes accessibility through adaptive cycling sessions for riders with disabilities. The administration's investments in multimodal transportation include the addition of bike lanes and dedicated bus lanes throughout the District. The upcoming FY26 Budget continues this trend with significant funding for new trails and improvements in transportation infrastructure.
