Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, the largest municipality-owned bikeshare in the U. S. since its launch in 2010. Originally starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi now features over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across the District and neighboring jurisdictions. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the program's importance in connecting residents to essential services and cultural sites.

In 2024, the system recorded over 6 million trips, reflecting a 36. 9% increase from 2023 and breaking annual ridership records for the second consecutive year. The introduction of e-bikes in 2018 has led to a significant shift, with e-bikes now accounting for over 60% of rides. Recent efforts include replacing older stations and launching a solar canopy pilot to support e-bike charging. The Bowser Administration's investments have resulted in 55 miles of new bike lanes and expanded access to cycling for residents with disabilities.

Future budgets will continue to prioritize multimodal transportation improvements throughout the District.
