Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration marks the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), a groundbreaking bikeshare program that has transformed transportation in Washington, D. C. Since its launch in 2010 with just 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi has expanded to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across D. C. , Maryland, and Virginia.
In 2024, ridership reached an unprecedented 6 million trips, a 36. 9% increase from the previous year, showcasing the system's growing popularity. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted CaBi's importance in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites. Recent upgrades include the replacement of over 140 old stations and the launch of a solar canopy pilot for e-bike recharging, aimed at improving service efficiency. The Bowser Administration has invested significantly in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network.
The FY26 Budget includes historic funding for transportation infrastructure improvements across all eight wards. These initiatives underscore the administration's commitment to making cycling accessible and safe for all residents.
