Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, a pioneering bikeshare system that has transformed transportation in the District since its launch in 2010. The program has expanded to more than 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, with over 50 million trips taken to date. In 2024, the system recorded over 6 million trips, marking a significant 36. 9% increase from the previous year and breaking the all-time annual ridership record for the second straight year. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the program's role in connecting residents to jobs and cultural destinations.

Recent upgrades include a solar canopy pilot at four stations, enhancing operational efficiency by allowing e-bikes to recharge while docked. The Bowser Administration has invested heavily in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes and nearly doubling the number of CaBi stations. Additionally, the partnership with Achilles International provides adaptive cycling sessions for riders with disabilities, expanding access to cycling. The FY26 Budget, Grow DC, further supports these initiatives with significant funding for pedestrian and bike trails.
