Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has transformed transportation in the DC area since its launch on September 20, 2010. Originally starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi now boasts over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, making it the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the U. S. In 2024, riders recorded more than 6 million trips, marking an impressive 36. 9% increase from the previous year and setting a new annual ridership record.
DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the program's role in connecting residents to jobs and cultural destinations. The introduction of e-bikes in 2018 has led to them comprising over 60% of all rides. Additionally, adaptive cycling sessions have been launched to promote inclusivity for riders with disabilities. The Bowser Administration has invested in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network. Future budget allocations will further enhance transportation infrastructure throughout the District.
