Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the U. S. , which has transformed urban mobility since its launch in 2010. Initially starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi now boasts over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, allowing riders to take more than 50 million trips to date. In 2024, CaBi recorded over 6 million trips, setting an all-time annual ridership record for the second year in a row.
DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum noted the system's significance in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites. The program has also introduced a solar canopy pilot to recharge e-bikes, enhancing operational efficiency. Additionally, free adaptive cycling sessions for riders with disabilities have expanded access to cycling in the District. The Bowser Administration's ongoing investments aim to enhance multimodal transportation, including the addition of bike lanes and dedicated bus lanes. The FY26 Budget includes historic transportation funding, underscoring the commitment to improve urban transit options.
