Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has evolved from a small pilot program into the largest municipality-owned bikeshare in the U. S. since its launch in 2010. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the system's importance in enhancing mobility and promoting health. In 2024, Capital Bikeshare recorded over 6 million trips, marking a 36.
9% increase from the previous year and breaking annual ridership records for the second consecutive year. E-bikes, introduced in 2018, have become increasingly popular, comprising more than 60% of rides. The program also aims to enhance cycling accessibility through partnerships that provide adaptive cycling options for individuals with disabilities. Since 2021, DDOT has replaced over 140 older stations as part of ongoing maintenance efforts. The Bowser Administration has invested heavily in multimodal transportation, including the construction of bike lanes and trails.
The FY26 Budget continues this trend with significant funding for transportation improvements across the District.
