Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration commemorated the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), a pioneering bikeshare system that has redefined transportation in the District of Columbia. Launched on September 20, 2010, CaBi has grown from a pilot program with 49 stations to the largest municipality-owned bikeshare in the U. S. , boasting over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes. Riders have completed more than 50 million trips, with 6 million recorded in 2024 alone, breaking the annual ridership record for the second consecutive year.
District Department of Transportation Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized CaBi's significance in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural venues. Since 2021, DDOT has upgraded over 140 older stations and launched a solar canopy pilot to support e-bike charging. The administration's investments in multimodal transportation include 55 miles of bike lanes and expanded pedestrian infrastructure. The FY26 Budget, Grow DC, allocates historic funding to further enhance transportation options across the District. Residents can explore the bikeshare system's offerings at capitalbikeshare.
