Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration marked the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has become the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the United States. Launched on September 20, 2010, CaBi has expanded from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, serving eight jurisdictions across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. In 2024, the program achieved a new milestone with more than 6 million trips recorded, breaking the previous year's record. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum stated that the bikeshare system is essential for connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites. Since 2021, more than 140 stations have been updated as part of ongoing repairs, and a new solar canopy pilot for e-bikes has been introduced.

The administration's historic investments in multimodal transportation include building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network. CaBi also collaborates with Achilles International to provide adaptive cycling sessions, enhancing access for riders with disabilities. The FY26 Budget allocates significant funding to further improve transportation infrastructure across the District.
