Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), marking its transformation from a pilot program to the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the U. S. Launched in 2010, CaBi now features over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, with e-bikes making up more than 60% of rides. In 2024, the program achieved over 6 million trips, breaking its annual ridership record for the second straight year. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted CaBi's significance in providing affordable and accessible transportation options for District residents.
The program has also launched adaptive cycling sessions for riders with disabilities, enhancing inclusivity. Since 2021, DDOT has replaced over 140 older stations as part of State of Good Repair efforts. This year, the FY26 Budget includes historic investments in transportation, with $64 million for WMATA and $74 million for new trails. The Bowser Administration encourages exploration of the CaBi system through its website.
