Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrated the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has become the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the U. S. since its inception on September 20, 2010. Initially starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, it now boasts over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across Washington, D. C.
, Maryland, and Virginia. In 2024, the program recorded over 6 million trips, marking a 36. 9% increase from the previous year and setting a new annual ridership record. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted the bikeshare's impact on connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites. The administration has invested in upgrading older stations and piloting solar canopies for e-bike recharging at select locations.
Additionally, partnerships have expanded access to adaptive cycling for residents with disabilities. The District has built 55 miles of bike lanes and dedicated bus lanes, enhancing transportation infrastructure. The FY26 Budget includes $64 million for WMATA and $74 million for new trails, reflecting ongoing commitment to multimodal transportation solutions.
