Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), a groundbreaking bikeshare program launched on September 20, 2010. Originally a collaboration between the District of Columbia and Arlington County, CaBi has expanded to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, becoming the largest municipality-owned bikeshare in the U. S. In 2024, the system recorded over 6 million trips, setting a new annual ridership record for the second consecutive year. E-bikes, introduced in 2018, now account for more than 60% of rides, reflecting a shift towards greener transportation options.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has replaced over 140 of the oldest stations as part of ongoing maintenance efforts and has launched a solar canopy pilot to enhance service efficiency. Additionally, CaBi has partnered with Achilles International to offer free adaptive cycling sessions for residents with disabilities. The Bowser Administration has invested heavily in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network. The FY26 Budget further supports these initiatives, allocating $64 million to WMATA and $74 million for new pedestrian and bike trails.
