Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrated the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has evolved into the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the United States. Since its inception on September 20, 2010, CaBi has expanded from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across the District, Maryland, and Virginia. In 2024, the program recorded more than 6 million trips, a 36. 9% increase compared to the previous year, marking the second consecutive year of record ridership. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the program's importance in providing affordable and accessible transportation options.
Recent upgrades include the replacement of over 140 older stations and the introduction of solar canopies for e-bike charging. CaBi also promotes inclusivity with adaptive cycling sessions available for individuals with disabilities. The Bowser Administration has invested significantly in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network. The FY26 Budget, Grow DC, further supports these initiatives with historic transportation investments across all eight wards.
