Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration marked the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has transformed transportation in Washington, D. C. since its inception in 2010. Originally starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, the program has expanded to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, facilitating over 50 million trips. In 2024, the bikeshare system recorded more than 6 million trips, a record high reflecting a 36.
9% increase from the previous year. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has actively replaced older stations and introduced a solar canopy pilot to enhance operational efficiency. Investments in multimodal transportation have resulted in 55 miles of bike lanes and expanded access to cycling for residents, particularly those with disabilities through adaptive cycling programs. DDOT's ongoing efforts aim to ensure safe, affordable, and accessible travel options for all residents. The FY26 Budget, Grow DC, promises continued investment in transportation infrastructure across all eight wards.
