Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration marks the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), the nation's largest municipality-owned bikeshare system. Launched in 2010, CaBi has expanded from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across the District and surrounding areas. In 2024, the program recorded over 6 million trips, setting a new annual ridership record and reflecting a 36. 9% increase from the previous year. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has replaced more than 140 older stations since 2021 as part of ongoing maintenance efforts.

A solar canopy pilot was also initiated to allow e-bikes to recharge while docked, improving service and reducing costs. Through partnerships, CaBi has increased access to cycling for all residents, including those with disabilities, with free adaptive cycling sessions. The Bowser Administration's investments in multimodal transportation have included building new bike lanes and expanding trail networks. The FY26 Budget continues this trend with significant funding for transportation initiatives across all eight wards.
