Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration celebrated the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), which has transformed transportation in the District since its inception in 2010. Initially starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi now boasts over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, facilitating more than 50 million rides to date. In 2024, the bikeshare system achieved a record 6 million trips, reflecting a 36. 9% increase from 2023 and consistent monthly ridership growth for 43 months. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted the importance of CaBi in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural destinations.

The administration's investments have included replacing over 140 aging stations and piloting solar canopies to recharge e-bikes. CaBi also promotes inclusivity through partnerships providing adaptive cycling options for individuals with disabilities. Mayor Bowser's ongoing support for multimodal transportation emphasizes the need for safe cycling infrastructure across the District. The FY26 Budget, Grow DC, reinforces this commitment with significant funding for new bike trails and public transportation improvements.
