Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), which has transformed transportation in the District since its launch in 2010. Originally starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi has expanded to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, making it the largest municipality-owned bikeshare in the United States. In 2024, the system recorded over 6 million trips, a 36. 9% increase from the previous year, showcasing its growing popularity. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the program's role in connecting residents to essential locations like jobs and schools.
Recent enhancements include a solar canopy pilot to recharge e-bikes and over 140 station replacements to improve reliability. Moreover, partnerships have introduced free adaptive cycling sessions for riders with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity. The Bowser Administration has committed significant funds to multimodal transportation, with plans for continued investment in bike lanes and trails. These efforts reflect a broader commitment to sustainable and accessible transportation options across the District.
