Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, the first municipal bikeshare system in the U. S. , which has grown significantly since its inception in 2010. Director Sharon Kershbaum of the District Department of Transportation noted that CaBi has become a vital means of transportation for residents and visitors alike. With over 6 million trips recorded in 2024, the bikeshare program experienced a 36.
9% increase in ridership from the previous year, demonstrating its growing popularity. The DDOT has invested in the system by replacing more than 140 outdated stations and piloting solar canopies for e-bike charging at four locations. CaBi also aims to enhance accessibility through partnerships offering adaptive cycling for individuals with disabilities. The Bowser Administration has made substantial investments in multimodal transportation, including 55 miles of bike lanes and 13 miles of dedicated bus lanes. The FY26 Budget continues this trend with historic transportation funding to support infrastructure improvements.
Residents are encouraged to explore the bikeshare system via its website for pricing and station maps.
