Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, the U. S. 's first bikeshare system, which launched in 2010. Initially starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi now operates over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes throughout D. C.
, Maryland, and Virginia. In 2024 alone, riders took more than 6 million trips, setting a new annual record and indicating a 36. 9% increase from the previous year. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized CaBi's importance in connecting residents to jobs and cultural destinations. The program has implemented initiatives like adaptive cycling sessions for individuals with disabilities, promoting inclusivity in cycling.
Since 2021, DDOT has upgraded over 140 older stations and launched a solar canopy pilot to enhance e-bike service. The administration's FY26 Budget includes historic investments aimed at improving transportation infrastructure, with a focus on bike lanes and trails. These developments reflect a commitment to expanding multimodal transportation options for all residents.
