Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration marked the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), a pioneering bikeshare system in the U. S. since its launch in 2010. Initially a partnership between the District of Columbia and Arlington County, CaBi has expanded from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across eight jurisdictions. Riders have taken more than 50 million trips, with over 6 million recorded in 2024 alone, representing a 36.

9% increase from the previous year. E-bikes, introduced in 2018, now account for over 60% of rides, indicating a shift toward more sustainable transportation options. DDOT has invested in replacing more than 140 older stations and initiated a solar canopy pilot to allow e-bikes to recharge while docked. The Bowser Administration has also made significant investments in multimodal transportation, including the construction of 55 miles of bike lanes. The FY26 Budget, named Grow DC, continues this trend with substantial funding for transportation improvements.
