Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), a groundbreaking bikeshare system that began in 2010. Initially launched with 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi has expanded to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, serving the District and neighboring areas. Riders have taken more than 50 million trips, with 2024 seeing over 6 million trips, marking a 36. 9% increase from the previous year. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is actively investing in the system, having replaced over 140 older stations since 2021 and launching a solar canopy pilot to recharge e-bikes.

The introduction of e-bikes in 2018 has led to over 60% of rides being on these electric models. CaBi also enhances access to cycling through partnerships that offer adaptive cycling options for individuals with disabilities. The Bowser Administration has made significant investments in multimodal transportation, including 55 miles of new bike lanes and expanded bus lanes. This anniversary underscores the ongoing commitment to sustainable and accessible transportation options in the region.
