Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration proudly celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has evolved into the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the U. S. since its launch on September 20, 2010. The program has facilitated over 50 million trips, with 6 million trips recorded in 2024, breaking previous ridership records. District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted the bikeshare's importance in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites.

E-bikes, introduced in 2018, now account for more than 60% of all rides, showcasing a shift towards sustainable transportation. DDOT has replaced over 140 of the oldest CaBi stations as part of its State of Good Repair efforts and initiated a solar canopy pilot to enhance operational efficiency. The Bowser Administration has invested significantly in multimodal transportation, contributing to the development of 55 miles of bike lanes and the expansion of the trail network. The FY26 Budget, Grow DC, further supports these efforts with historic funding for transportation across all eight wards. Residents and visitors can explore the system and pricing at capitalbikeshare.
