Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, a pioneering bikeshare system that has become the largest municipality-owned program in the United States. Since its launch in 2010, CaBi has facilitated over 50 million trips, with more than 6 million trips recorded in 2024 alone, marking a 36. 9% increase from the previous year. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the system's role in connecting residents to key destinations and the ongoing investments to enhance its accessibility. The program has expanded from an initial 49 stations to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
Recent upgrades include replacing outdated stations and introducing a solar canopy pilot to recharge e-bikes. Additionally, CaBi has partnered with Achilles International to provide free adaptive cycling sessions for riders with disabilities. Mayor Bowser's administration has committed substantial funding to multimodal transportation, including building new bike lanes and pedestrian trails. These efforts aim to further promote healthier and greener transportation options in the District.
