Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), a pioneering bikeshare system in the U. S. Launched on September 20, 2010, CaBi has grown from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes in the District and surrounding areas. In 2024, the program recorded more than 6 million trips, breaking its own annual ridership record for the second year in a row. District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Sharon Kershbaum noted the system's importance in connecting residents to jobs, parks, and cultural sites.

Since 2021, DDOT has replaced over 140 older stations and introduced a solar canopy pilot at four stations to enhance e-bike service. Furthermore, adaptive cycling sessions are now offered for riders with disabilities, promoting inclusivity in cycling. The FY26 Budget includes historic investments in multimodal transportation, with $64 million allocated for WMATA and $74 million for new pedestrian and bike trails. These efforts reflect the administration's commitment to expanding access to safe and affordable transportation options.
