Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), noting its evolution from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. In 2024, riders logged more than 6 million trips, breaking the all-time annual ridership record for the second year in a row. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum remarked on CaBi's essential role in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites. The program has also introduced e-bikes, which now account for over 60% of rides. Recent upgrades include the replacement of more than 140 older CaBi stations and a solar canopy pilot that allows e-bikes to recharge while docked.

Additionally, CaBi has expanded access to cycling through free adaptive cycling sessions for riders with disabilities. The Bowser Administration has made historic investments in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes in the past decade. The upcoming FY26 Budget promises further enhancements with $64 million for WMATA and $74 million for new trails.
