Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), which has evolved into the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the United States since its launch in 2010. Originally a partnership between D. C. and Arlington County, CaBi has expanded from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across eight jurisdictions. In 2024, riders took over 6 million trips, breaking the annual ridership record for the second consecutive year and reflecting a 36.
9% increase from 2023. DDOT has invested significantly in infrastructure, replacing more than 140 older stations and launching a solar canopy pilot program for e-bike charging. The administration's historic investments in multimodal transportation include building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding pedestrian and bike trails. CaBi also promotes inclusive cycling through partnerships providing adaptive cycling options for riders with disabilities. The FY26 Budget allocates $64 million for WMATA funding and $74 million for new trails, further enhancing transportation options.
