Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), which has become the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the United States since its launch in 2010. CaBi has facilitated over 50 million trips, with 2024 recording more than 6 million trips, setting a new annual ridership record for the second consecutive year. District Department of Transportation Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted the program's importance in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural destinations. Originally starting as a partnership between the District of Columbia and Arlington County, CaBi has expanded from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across eight jurisdictions in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Recent upgrades include replacing over 140 of the oldest stations and launching a solar canopy pilot for e-bikes to reduce operational costs.
The Bowser Administration has made historic investments in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network significantly. The FY26 Budget, Grow DC, continues this trend with substantial funding for bike trails and public transit enhancements.
