Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), a groundbreaking bikeshare system that has reshaped transportation in the District since its inception in 2010. Initially launched with 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi now boasts over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, serving eight jurisdictions across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. In 2024 alone, riders took more than 6 million trips, setting a new annual ridership record for the second consecutive year, with a 36. 9% increase from 2023. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized CaBi's importance in connecting residents to jobs and cultural destinations.

The administration's investments in multimodal transportation include the construction of 55 miles of bike lanes and the addition of new pedestrian and bike trails. Recent initiatives, such as a solar canopy pilot for e-bike stations, aim to enhance sustainability and reduce operational costs. Additionally, partnerships with organizations like Achilles International expand cycling access for people with disabilities. These efforts reflect the administration's commitment to promoting safe, affordable transportation options for all.
