Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the U. S. Launched on September 20, 2010, CaBi has expanded from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across D. C. , Maryland, and Virginia.
In 2024, riders took over 6 million trips, a 36. 9% increase from the previous year, contributing to a total of more than 50 million trips since the program's inception. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized CaBi's importance in connecting residents to essential services and cultural locations. The program promotes accessibility, offering adaptive cycling options for individuals with disabilities through a partnership with Achilles International. Since 2021, DDOT has replaced over 140 older stations and launched a solar canopy pilot to improve e-bike service.
The Bowser Administration's investments in multimodal transportation have included building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network. The FY26 Budget continues these efforts with significant funding for pedestrian and bike infrastructure.
