Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration commemorated the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has become the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the United States. Launched on September 20, 2010, CaBi has expanded significantly, growing from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes serving the District and surrounding areas. In 2024, riders took more than 6 million trips, setting a new annual ridership record for the second year in a row. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized CaBi's importance in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites. Recent enhancements include the replacement of over 140 older stations and a solar canopy pilot to recharge e-bikes.
CaBi also promotes accessibility through partnerships offering adaptive cycling for individuals with disabilities. The Bowser Administration has invested substantially in multimodal transportation, including the construction of 55 miles of bike lanes and the expansion of dedicated bus lanes. The FY26 Budget allocates further funds for transportation improvements across all eight wards.
