Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, a transformative bikeshare program established in 2010. Initially starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, it has expanded significantly to include more than 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across D. C. , Maryland, and Virginia. In 2024, the system recorded over 6 million trips, surpassing its previous ridership records for the second consecutive year.
DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted the program's importance in providing affordable and accessible transportation options. Recent enhancements include replacing over 140 of the oldest stations and launching a solar canopy pilot to recharge e-bikes, aimed at reducing operational costs. Capital Bikeshare also promotes inclusivity through partnerships offering adaptive cycling sessions for individuals with disabilities. The Bowser Administration has invested heavily in multimodal transportation, constructing 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network. The FY26 Budget continues this trend with substantial funding for new biking and pedestrian projects.
