Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, a pioneering bikeshare system in the U. S. Launched in 2010, CaBi has grown from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, recording more than 50 million trips. In 2024, the program achieved a record of over 6 million trips, marking a 36. 9% increase compared to 2023.

District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted CaBi's role in enhancing mobility for residents, workers, and visitors. The program has also introduced e-bikes, which now account for over 60% of rides. Since 2021, DDOT has upgraded over 140 older stations and launched a solar canopy pilot at four stations to improve operational efficiency. Additionally, the administration provides free adaptive cycling sessions for riders with disabilities, expanding access to cycling. Investments in multimodal transportation continue, with plans for new bike trails and bike lanes included in the FY26 Budget.
