Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrated the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, a pioneering bikeshare system that began on September 20, 2010. Initially a partnership between D. C. and Arlington County, the program has grown to include over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, making it the largest municipality-owned bikeshare in the U. S.
Riders have taken more than 50 million trips, with over 6 million trips reported in 2024, marking a 36. 9% increase from the previous year. The program emphasizes healthier and greener transportation options and has introduced adaptive cycling sessions for individuals with disabilities. DDOT has undertaken significant improvements, replacing over 140 older stations and launching a solar canopy pilot to recharge e-bikes. The Bowser Administration has invested in multimodal transportation, including building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network to 67 miles.
The FY26 Budget further supports these efforts with substantial funding for new pedestrian and bike trails. Capital Bikeshare continues to play a vital role in connecting residents to essential services and recreational activities.
