Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration marks the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, a pioneering bikeshare system in the U. S. Launched on September 20, 2010, the program has grown from 49 stations and 400 bikes to more than 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. Riders have completed over 50 million trips, with 2024 alone recording more than 6 million rides, setting a new annual record for the second consecutive year. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has replaced over 140 older stations and introduced a solar canopy pilot to enhance e-bike usage.
A partnership with Achilles International offers free adaptive cycling sessions for residents with disabilities. Mayor Bowser's administration has invested heavily in multimodal transportation, including the construction of bike lanes and bus lanes. The FY26 Budget allocates significant funding for further transportation improvements across all eight wards. Residents can explore the system and pricing at the official Capital Bikeshare website.
