The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has become the largest municipality-owned bikeshare in the United States. Since its launch in 2010, the program has expanded from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across Washington, D. C. , Maryland, and Virginia. In 2024, Capital Bikeshare recorded more than 6 million trips, marking a new all-time annual ridership record.

District Department of Transportation Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the program's significance in promoting healthier transportation options. Recent efforts include replacing over 140 outdated stations and launching a solar canopy pilot for e-bike recharging. The Bowser Administration has invested in 55 miles of bike lanes and other multimodal projects to enhance transportation accessibility. The FY26 Budget builds on these initiatives, allocating substantial funding for pedestrian and bike trails. This commitment aims to ensure safe and affordable travel options for all residents and visitors.
