Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), a pioneering bikeshare system that has expanded significantly since its inception in 2010. Originally starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi now boasts over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes in the District and surrounding jurisdictions. Riders have taken more than 50 million trips, with over 6 million recorded in 2024 alone, setting an all-time annual ridership record. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the system's importance in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites. E-bikes, which represent over 60% of rides, have enhanced accessibility for a diverse range of users.

The administration has focused on multimodal transportation investments, including the construction of 55 miles of bike lanes. In addition, DDOT has replaced over 140 older stations and launched a solar canopy pilot to improve service efficiency. The FY26 Budget proposes further investments in transportation infrastructure to continue this momentum.
