Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

The Bowser Administration celebrated Capital Bikeshare's 15th anniversary, highlighting its impact on transportation in the District. Since its inception in 2010, the program expanded from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, facilitating more than 50 million trips. The 2024 ridership surpassed 6 million, marking a record for the second consecutive year, with a 36. 9% increase from 2023. E-bikes, introduced in 2018, now account for over 60% of rides, demonstrating a shift towards greener transport options.

The District Department of Transportation is committed to enhancing the bikeshare system, recently replacing over 140 old stations and launching a solar canopy pilot to reduce costs. Additionally, the program has partnered with Achilles International to offer adaptive cycling sessions for residents with disabilities. The Bowser Administration has invested heavily in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network. The upcoming FY26 budget aims to continue these transportation investments across the District.
